Legal Referral Services

The JFS Legal Referral Service was created to help our clients in these tough economic times to obtain legal consultation and possible representation.  We are looking for lawyers who are willing to accept at least one pro bono client per year to help with their legal issues.

The commitment may only require a simple phone call, or a letter, or a meeting, or a motion, or filing a lawsuit.  That is entirely the lawyer’s decision once they speak with the client and decide what needs to be done — but, a lawyer will satisfy their entire volunteer commitment for one year by agreeing to help just that one client.

We are looking for lawyers in all areas of law, however some of the more popular fields include:

  • Family Law
  • Bankruptcy
  • Real Estate
  • Elderlaw
  • Probate
  • Landlord/Tenant
  • Debt Resolution
  • Tax Law

Success Stories

Elaine

Elaine, an elderly JFS client, was divorced this year and had been overwhelmed by the upheaval in her life.  Her former husband had not paid expenses as ordered by the court and moved out of state.  In addition to just surviving day to day, she was ordered to sell the marital home so the assets could be divided.  She has not been able to find alternate living arrangements and was very fearful of losing the one secure place she owns.  The house had been listed and an offer was made.  Terrified of being thrown out into the street, she called her Case Manager at JFS.  Was she obliged to accept any offer, and what were the options she had?  She had only forty eight hours to decide.  On less than one hour notice, a volunteer attorney agreed to speak with her.  After reviewing her documents and talking through her options, she was told that she did not need to leave her home immediately.  She was immensely grateful for the help of our attorney and without whom she would have had to make a very difficult decision on her own.

If you are interested in volunteering your time or would like more information, please complete the form below or contact our Legal Referral Service Coordinator, Kelly Goldberg at 248.592.1907 or at jfslegalreferralservice.org.

Success Stories

Beth

Beth recently left a violent and stressful situation.  Her husband was abusing her physically, verbally and sexually.  With the help of JFS, she fled her marital home while her husband was at work, and is now living at the secure JFS shelter.  Fearing for her safety, she left quickly, without clothes, possessions or financial documentation.  In addition to receiving counseling services, Beth was assisted by one of our attorneys in order to file for divorce and maintain her safety.

Jenny

Jenny is a single mom raising a teenage daughter. Due to the current state of the economy, Jenny can no longer afford to live in the house that her daughter has grown up in.  She is desperately trying to make ends meet.  With the help of the Jewish Housing Association and one of our lawyers, Jenny has been able to stay in her house and continue to focus on putting the rest of her life back together
