Because We Care
Because We Care connects Jewish youth with opportunities to engage in service and work for meaningful change through flexible educational b’nai mitzvah service opportunities, including:
Participate in monthly hands-on service opportunities planned and coordinated by Jewish Family Service staff. Each program is uniquely fun and provides insight into how JFS helps your community. Come and serve every month, or pick and choose the projects that are of interest to you. We are currently working on the fall schedule, but here are some examples from this past year:
- September 17, 2017 1-2:30pm Playing with a Purpose
- October 1, 2017 1-2:30pm Sundaes in the Sukkah
- November 5, 2017 1:30-3:30pm Fall Fix Up
- December 3, 2017 1-2:30pm Hanukkah Helpers
- January 21, 2018 1-2:30pm Chicken Soup for the Soul of Detroit
- March 18, 2018 1-2:30pm Soothing Sunday
- May 20, 2018 1-2:30pm Spring into Action!
Our online crowdfunding platform can help you raise needed support for specific services at JFS. Create your own page and share it with family and friends to support the initiative of your choice.
We’ll provide you with a Tzedakah box or you can create one of your own. Fill it any way you choose—use your babysitting money, organize a pop can drive, have a bake sale…or any other creative way you come up with! This is a great opportunity to get friends and family involved, too.
Join this exclusive group of b’nai mitzvah teens who decide to donate 5% of their bar/bat mitzvah gifts to a great program or specific population at Jewish Family Service.
Create centerpieces for your bar or bat mitzvah celebration with items that can be donated to individuals served by Jewish Family Service. Possible themes include art supplies, books, camp items, school supplies, sporting equipment and more!
Because We Care Packages
Shop for and assemble themed care packages for individuals served by JFS. Possible themes include personal care, household care, fun for kids, seasonal care, or create your own!
The dedicated staff at JFS is available to work with you, your children, or your group to find the right service opportunity, based on your interests and schedule. Parents and participants will receive a program orientation, detailed instructions and suggestions for executing projects, and ongoing support to provide guidance and information.
We are happy to work with you on one of your own volunteer ideas and we’re available to work with classrooms and other groups.
